Abstract

Tapping on the living dialogue between Persian and Japanese architecture, the present study investigates the historical exchanges between Iran and Japan, with a particular emphasis on the profound impact of Persian architectural motifs on Japanese design. This examination delves into the complex cultural context surrounding these interactions, revealing how historical trade routes and cultural communication facilitated the exchange of ideas and artistic styles. Key architectural characteristics and motifs are meticulously analyzed, including intricate tilework, elaborate geometric patterns, and rich cosmic symbolism that are prevalent in Iranian architecture. The study also highlights the notable adoption and modern interpretations of these aesthetic principles by two prominent contemporary Japanese architects, Tadao Ando and Kengo Kuma. By evaluating their designs, the research emphasizes how these architects have integrated Iranian elements into their work, creatively adapting traditional motifs to fit modern contexts. Furthermore, the paper provides a comparative analysis of the architectural influences and cultural exchanges between the two nations. It discusses the cultural significance of such integration and its artistic implications, ultimately reflecting on the enduring relevance of these historical ties. The study suggests underscoring the power of art and architecture as vehicles for bridging diverse cultures, promoting understanding, and inspiring sustainable architectural practices in the contemporary world.
