Yezidism is an ancient faith, with a rich oral tradition that integrates some Islamic beliefs with elements of Zoroastrianism, the ancient Persian religion, and Mithraism, a mystery religion originating in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The origins of the name Yazīdī are uncertain; some scholars have proposed that it comes from the Old Iranian yazata, while others hold that it derives from the name of the Umayyad caliph Yazīd I, who is venerated by Yazīdīs.
Yazidis or Ezadis believe in one god, Tawusî Melek, a central figure in their faith , an angel who defies God and serves as an intermediary between man and the divine.
The Yazidis have inhabited the mountains of northwestern Iraq for centuries, and the region is home to their holy places, shrines, and ancestral villages. Outside of Sinjar, the Yazidis are concentrated in areas north of Mosul, and in the Kurdish-controlled province of Dohuk.
ISIS militants launched a genocide against the Yazidi community in Sinjar, northern Iraq, as a result of which hundreds of thousands of Yazidis are still displaced and living in harsh conditions.
The ISIS attacks that began on 3 August 2014 resulted in thousands being killed: the United Nations estimates that 5,000 Yazidi men died in the massacre.
