In recent decades, the Korean cultural wave has emerged as one of the most successful examples of soft power in the world. Adopting an approach that goes beyond conventional media-centered and commercial analyses, this article seeks to examine the historical, civilizational, and identity-related foundations that have provided the ground for the emergence of this phenomenon on the Korean Peninsula. To this end, cultural and political transformations in Korea from antiquity to the contemporary period are reviewed, and the redefinition of Korean national identity is analyzed across three phases marked by the country’s official naming. The present study demonstrates that the Korean Wave is not merely a media product, but rather a reflection of a historical pattern of “strategic appropriation” and “ideological hybridization” in Korea’s encounters with dominant global powers—an approach through which Koreans have been able to reproduce imported values in an indigenous form without relinquishing their cultural identity. Within this framework, the Korean Wave is understood as the cultural language of contemporary Koreans; a language without understanding which effective cultural and civilizational dialogue with this nation would not be possible. The article also considers, in light of the representational capacities of the Korean Wave in the field of cultural imagery, the possibility of utilizing it as a means for dialogue and international religious communication and propagation.
